Improving the environment by abandoning our fireplace
Apr 10th, 2007 by Matt
It was really cold this weekend at ChezArtz. Our drafty little house is not the most pleasant place to be on cold days, but one of its little pleasures is the fireplace. It’s just really comforting to sit in front of the crackling wood fire and relax. Unfortunately, it’s not so good for the environment.
Due to the high concentrations of particulates in the air in Denver in the winter (we get some nasty inversion layers), you’re only allowed to have a fire on certain days. New construction isn’t allowed to include a fireplace (or even a wood stove). ChezArtz 2.0 (aka Lyons) will have a gas fireplace, which won’t be nearly as pretty or atmospheric, but will unquestionably be better for the environment. (Treehugger has a good comparison of the particulates released by the various types of stoves.)
Sigh. Surprising what is hard to give up.
