Help for Haitian Children in Need

Our close friends are in the process of adopting two children from Haiti. Their biological children, Julia & Mason, are the same age as Gabriel & Lily and are our God children. When Clara, age 3, and Emerson, age 1.5, are finally able to come home to Colorado, they, too, will be our God children, and in our hearts, if not in a court of law, they already are. Clara & Emerson were matched with Heather & Eric a year ago this past February and since then, they have been able to make numerous trips to Haiti to visit them.

As you may have seen on the news in recent months, food prices in Haiti have risen to the point that many have resorted to eating dirt (see the CNN coverage of Haitians eating dirt cookies) and riots ensued that prevented our friends and other adoptive parents from visiting with the children last month.

The orphanage Clara & Emerson live in houses more than 300 other children and the food prices have made it difficult to provide the children with the food they need to survive. Our friends and several
other adoptive parents across the United States have arranged for a 40 foot container to be shipped to the orphanage. If we fill it, 18 tons of food will go directly to these children.

A mere $7.00 donation would feed 63 children at the orphanage for two days; $100 would buy nearly 200 pounds of staple foods like rice, sugar, flour, and powdered milk. If you are local to Colorado, the container will be here in July and I would be happy to help make sure the food gets to the right place so that it can make it into the shipment. If you are not, would you consider making a donation to help sustain these children until they can come home to their extended family here in Colorado? You can donate via mail or PayPal on the Foyer de Soin web site. Please be sure to note that your donation is for the Food Freight for Foyer campaign.

The more people who know about these children and their desperate situation, the better chance we have of collecting the 36,000 pounds of food it will take to fill the container. So ChezArtz is going to give away a $25 Target Gift Card to one lucky blogger who promotes the Food Freight for Foyer campaign on their blog and includes the above button (you can grab the code from the right-hand column). Just comment on this post with a link back to your post about Food Freight for Foyer and I’ll make a random selection when the container leaves Colorado in July.

What a fantastic way to get the word out. I’ll be donating on payday. The dirt cookies video was heart-tugging.

I was just talking with DH tonight about what foods to send. I suspect B12 is one of many dietary concerns. I’d send vegemite, but oy! it’s an aquired taste. Nutritional yeast and blackstrap molasses aren’t much better, I’m afraid. I’ll keep thinking on it, but will plan to pick up other things for little Clara and Emerson each week when I go to the grocery store.
